The Scouting Way

At the 229th Scout Troop of Hong Kong, we aim to provide an active education that supplements a child’s formal education and rote learning. Through leading activities by themselves in the community and in the wilderness, scouts learn through doing and communication with peers within a system proven to generate outstanding leaders.

The 229ers are led, at the core, by parents passionate in the development of children and adolescents. Assisting them are experienced instructors, university graduates and alumni of the troop itself. The leaders’ passion in youth development is channelled into forming and improving activities that are attractive for our scouts, such as: camping; hiking; community service; and sporting competitions. Scouts learning in this environment are encouraged to compete against fellow scouts not simply for the sake of being better, but to learn more skills and be able to teach them to others.

What sets our Troop apart from other outdoor activity centres such as outward bound and military training? It is how our Troop is organised. Our activities are not one-off, but are done serially within the same group of people. Wee-wees progress to Grasshoppers, who become Cubs, who graduate into Scouts. Almost every week and within each section, scouts learn work with others and scout leaders learn to take responsibility for others. Scouts are given continuous feedback so that they may learn to become better every time they participate. They forge long-lasting friendships within the troop that carry far into their school and working lives.

Our scouts are not alone, but are joined from all over the world by the International Scouting Movement. We participate in international ‘jamborees’ (camps) to open the horizons of our scouts and to let them make friends with others in the scouting community – children and teenagers who group together to build unity and a brotherly atmosphere, which eventually leads to collaboration and leadership.

Scouting with the 229ers promotes a child’s independence, leadership, communication skills, physical condition, social awareness, love of nature and perhaps best of all, their ability to be prepared – for all the hardship and joy that they may encounter in life.

Please feel free to drop us a line if you are interested in what 229 can do for your child!
